The 2-hour free online Workshop, Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) Energy Stakeholder Workshop: Consultation on data and indicators, was held on the 20th March 2023, from 10:00 to 12:00 CET (9:00 – 11:00 UTC).
Current energy indicators are hydropower (reservoir and run-of-river), wind power (onshore and offshore), solar PV power, and electricity demand.
Many other upgrades will be implemented, in a sequential manner with increasing complexity (e.g., increased spatial and temporal resolution, improved energy conversion accuracy), over the three years of the contract, which started in October 2022.
Actual developments will also be based on user feedback, and available products during the implementation of the contract.
Importantly, datasets produced by the C3S Enhanced Energy will be available via the C3S Climate Data Store (CDS). Similarly, software developed by C3S Enhanced Energy will, whenever practical, be implemented as tools in the CDS toolbox.
The workshop is been chaired by Dr. Alberto Troccoli (Founder & CEO of ICS), with contributions from Dr. Chiara Cagnazzo (C3S Sectoral Information System Manager, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts), Dr. Mattia Zaramella (CFO ICS), and Dr. Laurent Dubus (Senior Scientist, RTE, and Founder & Non-Executive Director, World Energy & Meteorology Council).
The C3S Energy service is been developed in partnership with the lead contractor Inside Climate Service S.r.l. (ICS), and subcontractors CNRS, ARMINES, EDF, EVEROZE, and ENEL, with input from energy sector stakeholders.
The Workshop was intended for anyone interested in the Global Energy Climate Service Sector.
It has been an opportunity to:
- Connect with experts in the energy and climate sectors
- Participate in the discussion on how to collect information about global energy data availability (specifically for wind, solar, hydropower, and electricity demand) and how to use them at their best.
- Discover potential additional energy indicators to be developed as part of the C3S Enhanced Energy operational system.
