From Science to Strategy: How ICS Turns Climate Data into Action
The world is saturated with complex climate data, but the real need is actionable intelligence—turning global models into local, real-world decisions. Inside Climate Service (ICS) exists to translate rigorous climate science into a clear, operational roadmap for resilience.
We are not just a data provider; we are a solution partner. Our operational model is built on a coherent, three-part process: taking the best available science, refining it through our proprietary tools, and applying it directly to solve the most pressing challenges faced by our partners in energy, water, agriculture, and infrastructure.
ICS Solutions: Turning Science into Strategy
Every solution begins with science. ICS leverages decades of applied research, using foundational datasets such as ERA5 for historical context and state-of-the-art CMIP6 models for future projections. This raw, complex data is then passed through our translation engine, ensuring it is bias-adjusted, downscaled, and tailored to specific regional and sector needs.
Our digital platforms act as the interface between pure science and practical application:
Teal Platform
Teal is a web-based visualisation tool and the main access point to our refined climate intelligence. It allows users to explore historical trends, operational forecasts, and long-term projections to 2100 in an intuitive interface. Teal democratizes climate information, making it accessible to decision-makers across an entire organisation.
ICS Climate Data API
For developers and analysts, the ICS Climate Data API offers a secure, scalable pipeline to integrate our curated datasets directly into models and decision-support systems. This transforms raw data into automated, near real-time intelligence that can power operational workflows, dashboards, and analytics.
WEFEX: Quantifying Extreme Weather Risk
WEFEX (Weather & Seasonal Forecast Extremes) is an interactive tool that helps organisations accurately estimate risks associated with extreme temperature, precipitation, and wind. By combining AI-enhanced ensemble weather forecasts with seasonal predictions and benchmarking against ERA5 percentiles, WEFEX provides clear, daily risk estimates to support targeted preparedness.
From Insight to Impact: Solutions in Action
The true measure of our translation engine lies in the real-world outcomes achieved through partnerships. Across regions and sectors, ICS combines scientific rigour and practical tools to deliver holistic climate solutions.
Fortifying Critical Infrastructure
In the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, ICS developed Web Basin, a specialised web-based hydrological application. High-resolution downscaled climate projections are used to compute flood hydrographs across the territory, supporting the engineering design of hydraulic structures and enhancing the Civil Protection Agency’s capacity to manage risk.
Securing Water and Agriculture
Through the LEB Canal project, ICS integrated real-time monitoring data with seasonal forecasts derived from models such as those used within the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). The result is an innovative irrigation management system that optimises water distribution, improves resource efficiency, and supports long-term agricultural sustainability.
Early Warning for ARPA Veneto
ICS built a fully integrated platform on Delft-FEWS to enhance regional climate and hydrological monitoring for ARPA Veneto. The system incorporates multiple numerical weather prediction models—COSMO-LEPS, COSMO-5M, ARPEGE-EU, ICON-EU, ICON-D2 and ICON-I2—to deliver high-resolution, multi-model forecasts.
Real-time tools assess water balance, drought and water stress indices, while satellite-based products monitor vegetation and soil conditions. Advanced modules support both historical and forecast-based analyses of extreme precipitation events, enabling robust return-period evaluations and supporting early warning and climate resilience planning.
Partnering for a Resilient Future
The ICS operational model—science translated into practice—is strengthened through collaboration. We work with international partners including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) to ensure our services remain at the forefront of climate intelligence.
By choosing ICS, partners gain more than data. They gain an end-to-end solution that couples scientific rigour with operational utility, helping transform climate challenges into strategic advantages for resilience and sustainable growth.
